Sydney Fish Market
Where Sydney’s seafood culture comes to life
In the heart of Blackwattle Bay, Sydney Fish Market hums with energy from sunrise to late afternoon. As the largest working fish market in the Southern Hemisphere, it’s both a seafood lover’s dream and a window into the real, unpolished side of Sydney Harbour.
Step onto the wharf to see trawlers unload the morning’s catch. Wander past crates stacked with over 100 species of seafood. Grab a seat by the water with a prawn roll in hand, or dive into the weird and wonderful at Sydney Seafood School. Whether you’re here for sashimi, sightseeing or to try your hand at oyster shucking, it’s an experience that never gets old.
The future is on the line
A new era is coming. The NSW Government is investing in a world-class redevelopment of the Sydney Fish Market, set to open in 2025. Designed by internationally acclaimed architects 3XN, the striking new facility will feature a wave-shaped roof that nods to the site’s maritime roots. It’s more than just a new building — it’s a $750 million commitment to the seafood industry, sustainability, and one of Sydney’s most iconic harbourside destinations.
More than seafood
Beyond the seafood stalls and wholesale auctions, you’ll find a vibrant selection of cafés, casual dining spots, bakeries, butchers, bottle shops and delis. Not sure where to start? Let our team at Hotel Woolstore 1888 point you in the right direction — whether you’re chasing the perfect crab linguine or a behind-the-scenes tour of the auction floor.
On weekends, Sydney Fish Market comes alive with families, friends, and foodies soaking up the buzz. Seasonal events like Easter, Lunar New Year and Christmas draw big crowds, so arrive early to beat the lines and find the freshest catch. Keep an eye out for seafood festivals and special masterclasses at Sydney Seafood School.
Planning your visit
Sydney Fish Market is open daily from 7am to 4pm, closed only on Christmas Day. Come hungry — and don’t be surprised if you leave with a full stomach and a bag of king prawns. It’s just a 10-minute walk from Hotel Woolstore 1888 to Sydney Fish Market. Cross the heritage-listed Pyrmont Bridge or follow the foreshore path along Darling Harbour. Prefer to ride? The Light Rail from Convention Station (a short stroll from the hotel) takes you straight to the market in one stop.
